Indrajit J. Jachuk,a retired Odisha police DG (Intelligence), committed suicide at his Deula Sahi home here on Tuesday night, sources said.
He was 71.
He was found hanging inside his house.
The incident happened when no one was at home. His wife Prabha Jachak had gone to Bhubaneswar to see a relative who is under treatment in a private hospital.
After she returned to Cuttcak, Mrs Jachuk found the door of her house locked from inside and her husband not responding to her repeated calls to open the door.
When the front door was broken open, Jachuk’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside the house.
DGP Prakash Mishra, Commissioner of Police Dr RP Sharma, DCP Sanjay Arora, Commandant of the 6th OSAP Battalion Lingaraj Parida and other senior police officers visited Jachak’s home to express their condolences.
There is no clarity yet on what led Jachak to end his life.
However, a source said the retired IPS officer was in a state of depression for some time.
Jachuk had taken retirement in 2003 as DG, Special Branch.
He was of a very friendly disposition and had earned the goodwill and affection of his colleagues, sub-ordinates as well as the common man during his long innings as an IPS officer in Odisha, during which he handled a number of sensitive and high profile cases with elan.
Jachuk is survived by his widow Prabha, only daughter Madhusmita Jachuk and son-in-law Sovan Panda.
