An engineering student and a scrap dealer were nabbed this afternoon by the Quick Action Team ( QAT ) of the Commissionerate Police, which seized illegal fire arms and ammunition from their possession near the Unit-IX Central School in the city.
They were apprehended before they could carry out a crime they had planned to commit, police said.
The arrested duo have been identified as Tusharkanta Tarania (41) of Kanti village under the Nuagaon police limits in Jagatsinghpur district, who currently stays at Sailashree Vihar and and Rakesh Kumar Bairiganjan (21) of Pratap Prasad village under Itamati police limits in Nayagarh district , who stays in Satyanagar Panjabi Colony under Kharavela Nagar police limits.
While Rakesh is the son of a civil engineer and a second-year student in a private engineering college near Khordha, Tarania is a scrap vendor, who was allegedly involved in two cases in the Kharavela Nagar police station area earlier.
Both were booked under section 25 of the Arms Act.
Police sources said after getting reliable information this afaternoon that two armed men were found moving in a car near the Unit-9 Central School allegedly with the intention of committing some crime, the Quick Action Team (QAT) along with a team of Kharavela Nagar police station intercepted the car near the Central School and nabbed the two accused.
The team also recovered a semi automatic pistol, four rounds of live ammunition, three magazines and three mobile phones from their possession. The car used by them was also seized by the police. Tarania owns the car, the police informed.
“Investigation is on to ascertain if there were other associates of the duo,” police said.
On Saturday night, the QAT of the Commissionerate Police had caught four hard-core criminals and seized illegal fire arms and ammunition while the gang was planning to commit dacoity in the Kalinga Nagar area.
