The exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained.

Forest Department officials had rescued the sick calf from the jungle under Sorada forest range in Ganjam district while patrolling in the area. He was unable to walk at the time of his rescue.

Veterinary surgeons along with Ghumusar South Divisional Forest Officer BK Acharya had rushed to the spot to supervise the rescue operation and treatment after getting information from the guards.

“Around 24 elephants, divided in different herds, are roaming in the area. The rescued calf might be a member of eight-member herd,” Sorada Forest Range Officer PK Sahu had said yesterday while adding that the herd had been seen camping in the nearby area from where the elephant calf was rescued.
