New Delhi: The Centre has readied draft Cabinet note for constituting inter-state river dispute tribunal to resolve Mahanadi water sharing dispute between Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
In a written reply to a question by MP AV Swamy in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Water Resources Sanjeev Kumar Balyan today said that the draft Cabinet note for constituting an inter-state tribunal to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute has been prepared.
Balyan has informed that the Odisha government had filed a complaint petition with the Central government on November 19 last year under section 3 of the Interstate River Water Disputes Act, 1956 (IRWD Act) to resolve the Mahanadi water sharing dispute.
On receipt of Odisha’s petition the Centre under section 4 of the IRWD Act constituted a negotiation committee comprising of Mahanadi basin states and concerned ministries of the Central government.
The Water Resources Ministry through a notification on January 19, this year constituted the negotiation committee which also had members from the Indian Meteorological Department and National Institute of Hydrology.
The negotiation committee held two meetings this year. Since complainant state Odisha did not participate at the two meetings held on February 27 and May 22 none of the meetings bore any results, Balyan added in his reply.
