Sambalpur, Jan 25:
Body of a newborn baby boy was recovered from inside the lavatory of Puri -Hatia Tapaswini Express at Odisha’s Sambalpur station in the wee hours today.
According to reports, some passengers spotted the baby stuck in the window of the lavatory in S-1 coach of the train just after it left Talcher station.
The GRP was informed about the incident following which the baby was rescued and rushed to the railway doctor here at around 3.30 am. However, the doctor declared it dead after examining the newborn.
The GRP sent the body for post-mortem.
“We rushed to rescue the child after the train halted at Sambalpur station. The baby boy was stuck in the window of the lavatory. He was taken to the railway doctor who pronounced it dead after examining it. The body was sent to VSS Medical College and Hospital, Burla for post-mortem,” GRP ASI Niranjan Das said.
It was yet to be ascertained as to who and why the baby was abandoned in the lavatory. The post-mortem report would throw light on the cause of death.
It is suspected that an unwed mother might have killed the baby after delivering the child to avoid public ignominy. Later, she would have tried to throw it from the window which didn’t turn out to be as she expected.
