Panic gripped Ghatagaon area of Keonjhar district following the death of a senior police officer in an attack by a gang of dacoits who bombed his vehicle and opened fire at him today.
The incident took place near Saharpada village, about 150 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, when Inspector-in-Charge Dilip Sahu and his men were chasing the gang of dacoits.
The dacoits opened fire at them and hurled country made bombs on the police vehicle, sub-divisional police officer Pradipta Nayak said.
Although Sahu managed to come out of the vehicle and opened fire at the gang, he sustained grievous injuries during the shooting. He was rushed to the government hospital in Karanjia where doctors declared him dead.
Sahu who hails from Kalahandi district had joined the Ghatgaon police station only ten days ago.
Expressing profound grief and shock over the incident, chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex-gratia of Rs 8 lakh to the family of the deceased.
“The state government would provide a job to the kin of the deceased”, Patnaik said while condoling the bereaved family members of Sahu.
The chief minister also praised the exemplary courage shown by the police officer, who, he said, had laid down his life while on duty.
