Jagatsinghpur, Nov 19:
The SC Cell of Congress today staged a road blockade at Kujanga in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district protesting the arrest of party leader Arindam Sarkhel alias Bapi.
Activists of the party blocked road at Kujanga by burning tyres affecting vehicular movement on the route for a while, sources said. The blockade was withdrawn after intervention of police.
This apart, workers under the banner of Paradip-Erasama Industrial Development Council staged a cease-work agitation in protest of the arrest.
As many as seven platoons of police forces have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident, sources added.
Notably, Sarkhel was yesterday arrested and sent to Kujanga Sub Jail for his alleged complicity in the murder of Mahendra Swain, General Manager of Hyderabad-based Seaways Shipping and Logistics Limited (SSLL).
The trade union leader turned politician was arrested hours after he surrendered before the Raghunathpur police station here.
He was then produced before the Kujang JMFC court and sent to jail as his bail plea was rejected.
“He was arrested under section 302, 120 (B), 34 of IPC. After his arrest, he was produced before JMFC court. Later, he was sent to 14-day judicial custody as his bail plea was rejected,” Nalini Ranjan Das, public prosecutor said.
Earlier in the day, a lookout circular was issued against him by Jagatsinghpur police.
