Bhubaneswar, Aug 19:
Aiming to corner the BJD government on the death of the burn victim from Mahakalapada, the Odisha Congress today urged Governor SC Jamir to dismiss the government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
A Congress delegation led by PCC president Jayadev Jena met Jamir and urged him to dismiss the BJD government for complete breakdown of law and order in the state.
“The overall situation of crime incidence, reporting, registration as well as the conviction rates in Odisha presents an extremely dismal picture, which is a matter of serious concern for the people of Odisha. This indicates a great failure on the part of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik,,” said a memorandum submitted by the Congress leaders to the Governor.
The memo further said that official statistics showed that crime had risen by about 15 per cent in the state in 2012 against last year. More importantly, the incidence of crime against women in Odisha was much higher than the national average, it pointed out.
Coming down hard on Health minister Damodar Rout for what it called his ‘cavalier statement’ on the reason for the Mahakalpada girl’s death’,the memorandum said it added insult to injury. “The statement shows the utter callousness of the Health minister and his devil may care attitude to the sentiments of the people and the life of the victim,” the memorandum said.
The ruling BJD has condemned the Congress for politicising a sensitive issue. “We condemn the evil design of the Congress, which is playing cheap politics instead of getting close to the people of Odisha,” said BJD vice-president Kalpataru Das, general secretary Arun Sahu and Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) president Sanjay Dasburma in a joint press release.
