Bhubaneswar, Feb 12:
The state Congress today staged a dharna in front of Raj Bhavan demanding action against SDPO, Malkangiri for his alleged role in the disappearance of Trinath Samrath, a native of Narayanguda in the district.
The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) also submitted a memorandum to the Governor seeking his intervention to trace the whereabouts of Samrath, who has gone missing after being arrested on theft charges on 23 April last year.
Nabarangpur MP Pradeep Majhi said Trinath went missing after he was arrested by Siva Subramanyum, SDPO of Malkangiri on theft charges. “Though eight months have passed in the meantime, he has neither been produced before the judicial court nor released from police custody. He has not yet returned to his home and is not traceable since his arrest,” said Majhi.
Though his family members have reported the matter to various authorities, including the district magistrate and the SP, there has been no response from them yet, he said.
It is to be noted that the OPCC had constituted a fact finding team led by Congress leader Ganeswar Behera, who had visited the village.
The Congress leaders alleged that the police did not cooperate with them and instead warned them against visiting the Maoist infested area.
According to the team which visited the village on 28 January this year, the victim was mercilessly beaten by police and is suspected to have succumbed to serious injuries in police custody.
The police took several steps to erase evidence of its deed, the team members alleged.
