Sambalpur/ Bhubaneswar, May 30 :
Seepage of water following development of cracks in the Burla power dam EL 470 has raised serious questions over the safety of the Hirakud Multi-purpose dam.
The state Energy department in a letter to the Odisha Hydro Power Generation Corporation (OHPC) in March this year had said that preliminary observations revealed seepage through cracks in EL 470 of the Burla Power Dam.
The letter also made a mention of a 6 inch long crack in the lower end that led to the seepage.
After receiving the note of warning from the Energy department, the OHPC has sent a letter to the chief engineer and basin manager, Upper Mahanadi Basin, Burla seeking advice on how the cracks could be repaired and the resultant seepage arrested.
The secretary Water Resources department Suresh Mohapatra has said he will be apprising the National Dam Safety Panel of the situation and would take necessary steps to plug the cracks in the gallery of the dam after it receives the advice of experts.
Experts from the National Dam Safety Panel are likely to visit the dam to examine the cracks and suggest remedial measures before monsoon hits the state mid-June.
