The Union Cabinet is likely to accord classical status to Odia language within a week.
In a release on Tuesday, Congress Rajya Sabha member Rama Chandra Khuntia said though the Home ministry and the Law ministry had received a recommendation to this effect from the Linguistic Committee of the Kendra Sahitya Academy on July 23, the process was delayed due to some reservations.
“However, the two ministries have finally sent their recommendations to the Cabinet secretariat after I took up the matter with Union minister of state in The PMO V Narayanasamy, Union Culture minister Chandresh Kumar Katoch, Cabinet secretary A Seth and Culture secretary Rabindra Singh in this regard”, Khuntia added.
It may be mentioned here that the process got delayed due to certain objections raised by Home and Law departments.
Once Odia gets the classical tag, it will be the sixth Indian language and the first in the Indo Aryan group of languages to get such a status.
