Bhubaneswr/ Cuttack, May 7 :
The lush green Barabati stadium in Odisha’s former capital city of Cuttack, is all set to host a top-of-the-table clash between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab tonight.
This will be the 29th Pepsi IPL match of season 2014.
Of course the win-loss pendulum between the two teams indicates it’s going to be a tough battle for both.
Punjab had won both their matches against CSK in the 2012 season, while CSK reversed the trend in the 2013 season. However, the fact that KXIP humbled CSK in a big run-chase in their season opener this year could give it a psychological edge over CSK.
Kings XI Punjab has great batsmen like Glenn Maxwell, David Miller and Virender Sehwag in its ranks, everything would depend on how well they perform at the crease on Wednesday.
For CSK, Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum, the most successful opening pair in IPL 2014, have done a great job for their team by giving their team a winning headstart in most matches.
KXIP-CSK clashes have produced some great performances including a terrific centuries by CSK’s Michael Husey in 2008, KXIP’s Paul Valthaty in 2011 and again CSK’s Suresh Raina’s maiden IPL hundred against KXIP in 2013.
However, Glenn Maxwell’s sparkling 95 off 43 balls against CSK in the third match of season 2014 as well as the failure of its bowlers to contain the opposition in the death overs should be reasons for CSK’s worry.
By all accounts, the match promises to end with an exciting finish.
The Barabati Stadium, where the CSK clashes with KXIP on Wednesday, has already hosted IPL matches in 2010 and 2012. It was adopted as the home venue for the erstwhile Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad.
