The District Child Welfare Committee (DCWC) of Odisha’s Puri district, District Child Protection Officer and Childline officials with the help of police today rescued a minor girl while she was being married off to a youth in broad daylight at the Rameswar temple here.
After her rescue, the victim was produced before the DCWC at the Utkal Balashram and questioned under what circumstances she was being married off to a youth. Reportedly, this was the second marriage of the youth.
“Action in accordance with the provisions of the law will be taken against the minor’s family and the youth who was marrying her. It is being investigated under what circumstances the marriage was being held,” said chairperson of DCWC Siddhartha Ray.
On the other hand, the minor has said that she had consented for the marriage.
“I had consented for the marriage. But I had no idea that it was his second marriage. I want to read. We are poor my family needs financial support,” said the minor girl.
“We are poor, I had no other way than marrying her off,” said the father of the minor.
