After the death of 31 persons in a boat mishap in the Hirakud reservoir, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today directed the concerned departments to adhere to the safety norms while allowing boats to operate in reservoirs and other water bodies.
During a review meeting held today at the state secretariat, the Chief Minister directed the concerned departments to examine the fitness of boats, skills of the boat drivers and capacity of boats before granting registration to ply on the water bodies.
Besides, routine checks are to be carried out in regular intervals.
The meeting also decided that safety jackets will be made available in the boats for the safety of passengers and the boatmen will be trained.
“The Odisha Boat Rule, 2004 will be strictly implemented and the license of violators will be cancelled. The Inland Transport Organisation coming under Commerce and Transport department will look into the matters,” said an official.
