While one more distressed farmer committed suicide in Odisha’s Nuapada district, state Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathi today once again faced protest from opposition parties in the state.
Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathi faced stiff opposition from Congress and BJP members as black flags were waved at him during his visit to the district to assess drought situation.
Despite deployment of securitymen at various places, the minister was shown black flags during his visit to Nuapada today. Besides, eggs were pelted at him, though it missed the target and hit his vehicle.
While on his way to Nuapada from Kalahandi, Congress and BJP members staged protests against Maharathi at various places. The activists from both the parties blocked the vehicle of the minister at Barpadar in Khadial and at Nuapada town. The agitating members showed black flags and shouted slogans against the state government.
Similarly, members of the saffron party too showed black flags to the minister at Khadial.
After facing series of protests in the district, the minister went to district Collector’s office to participate in a review meeting. Prior to the minister reaching the venue, eggs were pelted at his vehicle.
Meanwhile, five Congress members have been arrested by police for allegedly pelting eggs on Agriculture Minister’s vehicle.
Yesterday, School & Mass Education Minister Debi Prasad Mishra and Energy Minister Pranab Prakash Das were also shown black flags in Boudh district.
It may be recalled that the minister faced similar protest in Bolangir as BJP members had shown black flags at him demanding declaration of the entire district as drought-hit. The minister was shown black flags near Nanuhandi village in Patnagarh and at Mahulibahali village in Turekela block in the district.
Meanwhile, yet another distressed farmer today committed suicide at Thakurpani village under Komna block. The deceased Laxman Gouda ended his life by hanging himself from a tree in his field.
