Bhubaneswar, Feb 25:
Not impressed with the suspension of five police personnel in Keonjhar district for dereliction of duty and allowing all worldly comfort to Deepak Gupta, the prime accused in the Rs 1,800 crore Uliburu mining scam, the state BJP today saw the hand of the state government and police administration to help him remain out of jail for around four out of the five months that he was supposed to be in jail.
Alleging that the nexus between miners and government stood thoroughly exposed, the party demanded that the state government should resign immediately on moral grounds and action against the doctors and police personnel responsible for allowing him to stay out of jail.
Gupta, who was arrested on September 10 last year and sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected in the multi-crore mining scam, had managed to skip the major part of his stint in jail moving from one hospital to another on health grounds. He also allegedly spent some days in a hotel in Cuttack.
“Deepak has enjoyed a comfortable life for four out of the five months since his arrest in the mining scam. He was enjoying his life citing ill health and false treatment in various hospitals. There is no way doctors and police can help the mafia without express instructions from ruling party leaders. I can say that some ministers and ruling party leaders have helped Gupta and arm-twisted him to cough up money for the coming elections,” said BJP’s chief spokesperson Suresh Pujari.
He alleged that two ruling MLAs are involved in facilitating the booking of rooms in a private hotel for Gupta.
Of the 164 days since his arrest, Gupta allegedly spent over 100 days in various hospitals in Cuttack and Keonjhar.
Gupta was spotted at the cardio-thoracic department of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Saturday without any police security.
