Bhubaneswar, May 22:
The parliamentary party meeting of the BJD to decide its floor coordination strategy in the Lok Sabha will be held on Saturday.
According to sources in the BJD, the party would seek to put in place a mechanism in coordination with the AIADMK and TMC to lead the opposition in the Lok Sabha so as to isolate the Congress and deny it the principal opposition space in the lower house. Talks have already been initiated with the two other parties in this regard, the sources said.
The meeting will be attended by BJD supremo and chief minister Naveen Patnaik, besides the party’s 20 newly elected Lok Sabha members and Rajya Sabha members.
AIADMK has 37 members in the Lok Sabha and TMC 34. With the addition of the BJD’s 20, these three parties would constitute the largest single non-NDA grouping in the House. The three parties see an opportunity to combine their strengths in the new House and emerge as an influential grouping in the Lok Sabha that has the potential to push the Congress into the margins.
According to party sources, the meeting would also deliberate on nominating a parliamentary party leader in the Lok Sabha, deputy leader and treasurer. Senior BJD leader Arjun Charan Sethy is likely to be nominated as parliamentary leader in Lok Sabha.
