Anandpur (Keonjhar), Jul 22:
Two weeks after a bloody clash between the villagers and the police in Balabahali village of Anandpur subdivision in Odisha’s Keonjhar district on the issue of construction of a high level bridge over river Kusei, the District and Sessions Judge Court today granted bail to 63 women arrested by the police.
Among the 63 women are a woman aged between 65-70 and 10 having children of five years or less.
Police had arrested a total of 118 villagers after the clash in which 12 were injured on either side.
The Opposition Congress and the BJP had demanded immediate release of the arrested women.
The villagers, who had been opposing the construction of the proposed bridge at a particular location in the area, had staged a dharna on the National Highway-215 on July 6 demanding relocation of the proposed bridge on river Kusei.
But as talks between the villagers and the district administration failed to resolve the issue, the agitating villagers blocked the flow of traffic on either sides of the National Highway the next day and allegedly torched a site camp of a contractor firm Gayatri Constructions.
Later, a clash ensued when police tried to lift the blockade and prevent them from going on a rampage.
