Bargarh, Mar 17:
A dawn to dusk bandh called by Koshal State Coordination Committee to highlight the plight of the farmers today paralysed life in Odisha’s Bargarh.
Agitators were seen picketing across various places of the district in general and Bargarh town in particular to make the bandh successful.
While vehicular traffic came to a standstill, most shops and government offices remained closed. Passengers were seen stranded in bus stops. Even though there have been no reports of violence so far, security measures have been taken to avoid any untoward incident.
Emergency services, however, were exempted and educational institutes operated as usual in view of the ongoing examinations.
The bandh call has been given in the wake of government denial of farmer’s suicide in the state because of crop loss. It is being supported by Odisha unit of BJP, Congress, AAP, District Lawyers’ Association among many other civil society organisations.
The agitators are demanding the government to admit crop loss as the main reason behind the farmer suicides and to provide Rs 5 lakh compensation to the next of kin of each deceased farmer. They are also demanding input subsidy for the drought-hit farmers.
