Bhubaneswar, Jul 1:
SRP of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Police questioned suspended RPF IIC Sanjay Kumar Swain for over 90 minutes yesterday in connection to the attack on Kanak TV journalist Satyajit Sen in the Odisha capital on Monday.
RPF SRP Sanjay Kaushal led the questioning and grilled him on the reason the journalist was beaten up, his camera was broken and cassette taken away. Also, the IIC was grilled on the allegations of molesting protesting women and manhandling other men, including the Kanak TV cameraperson.
Satyajit, in the other hand, yesterday approached the Human Rights Commission seeking justice.
FIR was also lodged from both sides in the police station yesterday. While suspended IIC Sanjay filed an FIR against journalist Satyajit and his cameraman Shankar, Shankar filed an FIR against the IIC.
In another development, human rights activist Biswapriya Kanungo filed a petition with the National Human Rights Commission seeking exemplary punishment to the suspended IIC and compensation to the affected journalist and molested women.
“Inspector Sanjay Kumar Swain, along with RPF jawans misbehaved with women and attacked a journalist in his line of duty. This is a criminal offence. Suspension of the IIC is not enough. Disciplinary action needs to be initiated against him and the journalist and affected women need to be compensated,” said Kanungo.
Political support for the beaten up journalist poured in on the second day yesterday with CPI coming in to his support. CPI party workers went on to stop the trains in Bhubaneswar station for a while demanding justice for Satyajit and action against the cops.
It may be noted that Satyajit and Shankar were brutally beaten up and detained by Sanjay on Monday while they were covering the protest of railway passengers against a 16-hour train delay. The IIC and male RPF jawans were seen forcefully taking away women protesters and molesting them in the process. The IIC was infuriated once he discovered these activities being recorded by the Kanak TV journalists. He not only attacked them, but also broke their camera and took away the cassette that had the record of their illegitimate act.
