Cuttack, Jan 18 :
The trainee-reporter of Odia daily The Samaj Jitendra Prasad Das who was arrested on charges of publishing an objectionable photograph in the newspaper on Tuesday, was granted bail by the SDJM court here today, sources said.
The publication of the said photograph had led to angry protests by a minority community and ransacking of offices of the Samaj at several places including Cuttack, Rourkela and Baleswar.
Das’ arrest had caused outrage among the media fraternity and there were vociferous demands for his immediate release. While several media bodies had condemned the police action saying it was unwarranted, questions were also raised about how the editor and the publisher of the newspaper had escaped prosecution despite being morally and legally accountable.
Das who is lodged in Choudwar jail is expected to be released by the evening, sources said.
