Bhawanipatna: Hundreds of animals were sacrificed at Devi Manikeswari Peetha here in Odisha’s Kalahandi district today on the occasion of Chhatar Jatra, despite awareness created by the local administration to refrain from the same.

The mass sacrifice was carried out in the presence of policemen, reports said.

As per rituals, the ‘Mundabasa’ ritual of goddess Manikeswari is performed at the temple here on Ashtami tithi in Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwina.

The ‘Bijay Pratima Chhatar’ of the goddess will be taken out to Jena Khala. After special rituals, the Chhatar of the goddess will return to the temple in a large procession.

The return journey of the Chhatar to the temple is known as Chatar Yatra.

The district administration has made elaborate security arrangements for smooth conduct of both Chhatar Jatra and Maha Ashtami Puja of Goddess Durga. In Bhawanipatna, 10 platoons of police force have been deployed.
