AIU meet to begin at KIIT on Tuesday

The three-day annual general meeting (AGM) of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), an apex body of higher education in the country will begin on Tuesday, February 25, at the KIIT University, here.

This will be the 88th session of the AIU’s annual general meeting.

KIIT University is organising this meet in Odisha after a gap of long 67 years. Earlier it was organised by erstwhile Ravenshaw College.

The event will be formally inaugurated by the Odisha governor Dr SC Jamir at 4.30 pm on Tuesday, Founder of KIIT Dr Achyuta Samanta said at a press meet here today.

Around  500 vice chancellors, academic administrators, senior functionaries of various apex educational institutions  in India, representatives of the Union ministry of HRD as well as foreign dignitaries from around the world would take part in the meet, he said.

Dr Samanta said the President of AIU & Vice Chancellor Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture Technology and Sciences, Allahabad Prof. R B Lal, will preside over the inaugural ceremony.

Chancellor, KIIT University Prof N L Mitra and Vice President AIU & Vice Chancellor, Dharmsinh Desai University, Nadiad, Prof. H M Desai, will also be present on the occasion.

The meet will also take up vital issues like quality of higher education and funding, AIU president Prof RB Lal  said, adding, a number of important issues relating to the future of higher education in which private partners have to play a major role will be discussed during the annual meet.

 “The government cannot function in isolation without partnership with private sector and philanthropists if it is serious about providing quality education,” Prof Lal said.
A national seminar on Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) will also be held on the occasion. The main theme for deliberations  in the meet is the viability and desirability of the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) devised by the Ministry of Human Resources Development.

The brain storming session on this theme would see the vice chancellors discuss various aspects of the RUSA scheme and examine whether it can bring desired results in elevating our higher education system to world class standards.

Among the important dignitaries who are likely to attend the meet are Dr H Devaraj, Vice Chairman UGC, Prof A. Gnanam, Former Chairman, NAAC,  Rajiv Gupta, Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports,  Prof M M Ansari, Member UGC,  Dr Jayanti Ravi, Commissioner Higher Education, Gujarat and Dr Santosh Panda, Chairman, National Council for Teachers’ Education.

It may be noted here that the Association of Indian Universities is one of the premier institutions of the country working for the cause of Higher Education.  Since its inception in 1925, the AIU has been playing a vital role in shaping Indian higher education by being an integral part of all major decision making committees and commissions.

At present AIU has membership of about 461 Indian universities and 8 universities from other countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius, Dubai Kazakhstan and Malaysia who are its associate members.
