A 55-year-old physical education teacher (PET) suffered burn injuries on his face and body when two unidentified bike-borne miscreants threw acid on him while he was returning from school this afternoon at Purohitapur area in Balipatna in Khordha district close to the Odisha capital.
The victim, identified as Surendra Mohapatra, was rushed to the Capital Hospital for treatment by the school staff soon after the incident.
The incident happened when Surendra, a PET posted in Artatrana Vidyaniketan school, was returning from the school at around 4.20 PM.
Kailash Chandra Mishra, headmaster of the school, said the incident occurred some 1.5 km from the school boundary. “We have reported the matter to the local police and they are investigating it,” he added.
The head master said Surendra has been serving in the school for the last 25 years. “He is a nice person and has no enmity with any staff in the school.” He said.
Surendra, whose health condition is stated to be stable, said, “Two bike borne miscreants threw acid on me while I was returning from the school. All of the sudden, they fled the spot after executing the crime before I could raise an alarm to alert locals to catch them.”
The PET suffered burn injuries on his face and body and is getting treated at Capital Hospital here.
Meanwhile the police have launched a manhunt to nab the miscreants.
