Phulbani, May 14:
Police on Tuesday arrested eight members of a dacoit gang involved in a dacoity at Ghatikukpa village under Kandhamal Sadar police station limits on April 19 and seized stolen items and arms from their possession.
Briefing newsmen here, Phulbani SDPO Pravat Kumar Panigrahi said the arrested dacoits had barged into the house of Chakradhar Mallick, former sarpanch of Bilabadi panchayat late on April 19 night and looted gold and silver ornaments and cash worth Rs 15,000 after terrorizing his family members with sharp weapons.
Following a complaint lodged by Mallick, police arrested Abhimanyu Behera and Prasant Kanhar of Dakangi village on May 9. Later, acting on the information given by the two arrested dacoits during interrogation, police arrested six dacoits on May 12.
The six dacoits have been identified as Debendra Mukhi of Katringia village, Mrutyunjay Digal of Mallickpada, Krishna Digal of Phulbani, Silu Digal of Nuasahi village (Phulbani), Papu Naik of Simanbadi village and Alok Digal of Gudrumaha village under K Nuagan block.
Of the eight dacoits, Papu Naik and Alok Digal had committed dacoity in the house of Ilas Sahu of Oberi village under Daringbadi police station limits on August 27, 2012, the SDPO informed.
Apart from gold and silver ornaments, police seized five mobile phones, one toy gun, one sword, one bhujali and four knives from their possession.
The arrested dacoits were later forwarded to the court that remanded them to judicial custody after rejecting their bail plea.
