The 6th edition of KIIT International Chess Festival 2014 began at the KIIT University premises here today.
This year’s international edition is the biggest event so far with record prize money of Rs 19 lakh.
As many as 400 participants, including 65 Grand Masters (GMs), Woman Grand Masters (WGMs) and International Masters (IMs) from 20 countries, are participating in this tournament.
The players having FIDE rating of 2000 and above are in the elite category while the players with the FIDE rating of 1999 or below and FIDE rating 1599 and below are in platinum and premium category respectively.
There will be 10 rounds of matches in the elite category, 9 rounds in the platinum and 10 rounds in the premium category.
Inaugurating the mega event last evening, founder secretary of KIIT and KISS Dr Achyut Samanta said the performances of KIIT students in chess has been very impressive.
“KIIT Student,s including Swayamsu Mishra, Kiran Manisa Mohanty and Aparajita Gochhikar. have been performing in chess at the international level and have brought laurels for the University as well as the state,” he added.
The prize distribution ceremony will be held on May 31.
