The Forest staff of Rajnagar Wildlife Division in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, who had arrested six fishermen for illegally fishing inside the prohibited zone of Gahirmatha sanctuary on Friday night, forwarded them to the court on Saturday.
Later, by the order of the Rajnagar DFO Kedarnath Swain, the Forest staff raided the trawler and arrested six fishermen.
The arrested fishermen, identified as Prafulla Parida, Rama Chandra Parida, Chandrakanta Parida, Sapani Majhi, Pradip Majhi and Gayadhar Mallick, belong to Dadhibamanpur area of Bhadrak district, the DFO told the media.
With this, the Forest staff have so far seized five trawlers and arrested 38 fishermen for illegal fishing in the prohibited zone of Gahirmatha.
It may be mentioned that the Forest department has imposed a 7-month ban on fishing in and around Gahirmatha from November 1 in view of the annual mass nesting of Olive Ridley turtles.
