Nobel Laureate and Professor in George Washington University, USA, Ferid Murad inaugurated the second International Conference on Angiogenesis-Theragnostics in Cancer & Cardiovascular Diseases at KIIT University here on Sunday.
In his inaugural lecture, Prof Murad, who won Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1998 for his discoveries on nitric oxide as a signalling molecule in the cardiovascular system, spoke on discovery of the nitric oxide and cyclic cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP) signalling pathway and application to drug development and some biological effects of cyclic GMP.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Gopal C Kundu, National Centre for Cell Science, Pune, said the motto of the conference is to create awareness and further strengthen research and establish collaboration in the area of Angiogenesis in cancer and cardio vascular diseases.
Expressing his satisfaction over the conference, Padma Shri Dr KS Gopinath, Director, Bangalore Institute of Oncology, said the students of KIIT School of Biotechnology and others who are in the field of Angiogenesis will benefit form such deliberations.
Dr Dev Mukhopadhyay of Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer, USA laid emphasis on therapeutic research.
Earlier, Dr Achyut Samanta, founder, KIIT and KISS, welcomed the delegates.
Eminent researchers and clinicians in the field of angiogenesis and allied areas from all over the world are attending the three-day conference being organized by the KIIT School of Biotechnology in association with National Centre for Cell Sciences (NCCS), Pune.
