Bhubaneswar, Mar 15:
An exhibition of 167 ethnic designs in saris, by reputed international and national fashion designers of fame are being showcased in the Camelia Hall,at Mayfair Hotel, Bhubaneswar. Saris designed by Bibhu Mohapatra, the Odia fashion designer who made his state proud in the international circuit by designing a dress for the first lady of United States of America, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Rakesh Kumar Thakore , Anjali Thakore and Rita Kapur Chisthi, all of national repute, have come together to promote Odisha weavers, and have put in their creative ideas for this exhibition.
Ikat designs have been given the main thrust in each custom made sari. The show stopper of this exhibition is a Malda silk sari with the Odia calligraphy which is designed by famous designer Rita Kapur Chisthi and has been woven by state award winner Arjun Pal from Nuapatna. It has odia scripts intricately woven into it and is priced at a whopping Rs 25000.”This particular sari is expensive because the weaving has taken 15 days for completion , out of which 8-10 days have been taken up for the tie & dye process. This is a very difficult process due to it’s intricacy and has to be done very carefully,” explained Hemant Kumar Mishra , the marketing officer .
The other silk saris have been created from twisted silks and have been woven in Sambalpuri and Western Odisha traditional Mayuri, Bichitrapuri and Aradhana creations by weavers from Sonepur , Bargarh and Barpalli. The Malda silk threads are woven only at Nuapatna . Tops, salwar- kurta, shirts and gents kurta are available at reasonable prices.
This exhibition is organised by the Sambalpuri Bastralaya Handloom Co-Operative Society Limited, handlooms, textiles & handicrafts department ,Government of Odisha.
