Rayagada: Couple of days after several farmers in Odisha’s Bargarh district set their paddy fields on fire being worried over brown planthopper attack on crops, farmers did the same in Rayagada and Ganjam district today.

According to reports, Naidu Jogi, a farmer of Gadilgudi village under Ramanaguda block in Rayagada set afire damaged crops in over four acres of land as paddy grown by him had turned into chaff.

Similarly, another farmers at Limakudia village in Chikiti area of Ganjam resorted to the same act in two acres of land over crop damage due to pest attack.

The incident also comes a day after Brunda Sahoo, a farmer of Kalapani panchayat in Bargarh district, committed suicide by consuming poison.

Meanwhile, a three-member team of the state agriculture department today visited Bargarh to examine the insect-affected crops and submit a report.

The team also reportedly raided a pesticide shop in Bargarh town and examined the quality of pesticides as the concerned farmers had alleged that pesticide supplied to them by the state government’s Cooperation department was of inferior quality and had failed to save their crop from the pest attack.
