Bhubaneswar: In view of the rising air traffic in the country, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has urged the Odisha government for creating a greenfield international airport in the state.

In a letter to the state government, AAI Chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra has indicated requirement of 1,500 to 2,000 acres of land for such an airport near Bhubaneswar.

During his recent visit to Odisha, Mahapatra had held discussions with Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi and other senior officials regarding extension of the runway of the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here.

A minimum of 64 acres of land is required for a suitable expansion of the runway to operate international flights from the BPIA. However, removing various existing structures poses as a big hindrance in acquiring the required land.

Hence, Mahapatra has urged the Odisha government to identify a suitable area for a new airport preferably not far off from Bhubaneswar. He has also promised to provide necessary assistance in this respect.

Meanwhile, the Odisha government has initiated efforts to locate a suitable site for the proposed project.

“Identification of suitable land will be the first priority. The proposed airport could be set up on a public-private partnership (PPP) mode as AAI has not mentioned about investment plans for the project,” a government official said.
