Bhubaneswar: Yet another individual having roots in Odisha has made the coastal state of India proud.

Meet Anshuman Rath from capital city Bhubaneswar who has recently been named the vice captain of Hong Kong cricket team for the World Cup qualifying fixtures. Hong Kong, a former British colony, will play Nepal in October as part of the ICC World Cup Qualifier due March next year. This will decide the qualification for the 2019 World Cup.

The wicketkeeper-batsman and left-arm orthodox spinner adorned the Hong Kong jersey in 2014. In less than three years, he has been named the vice captain of the team.

The 20-year-old is hopeful to see his team through to the big arena.

“There is a possibility that Hong Kong will quality for the tournament. Qualifying for the Word Cup is tough but a disciplined and focussed game can do the trick. I am optimistic that my team can upset any team,” Rath told media.

The young boy got inspired by the gentleman’s game when he was a kid of only six years after watching India-Australia ICC World Cup final match on television. The cricket fever took him under its grip, not to fade away for ever.

In ODI career of 10 matches so far, Rath has scored 382 (50×4) runs with highest score of 97 at an average of 42.44, with an impressive strike rate of 73.32.

The Hong Kong-born all-rounder’s parents – Bhawani Shankar and Sujata – were supportive enough to pursue career in sports. The Raths had shifted to the foreign country in the late 1990s to try their luck in business. They originally belong to Satya Nagar here.
