Puri: In a shocking verdict by the Kangaroo court, a dalit family was ostracized from village for over a year and their house was destroyed as part of punishment for their four members accused in a murder case.

The incident took place in Aloopatna under Brahmagiri police limits where 30 members of a family belonging to Scheduled Caste paid a big price due to alleged involvement of their four members in a murder case. As part of the village court sentence, the family of four accused are not allowed to enter their own village and continue their fishing occupation in Chilika.

The head of the family is now surviving by working as a labourer in other villages in disguise.

According to reports, the kangaroo court drove the family out of village suspecting their involvement behind murder of Bira Behera’s son Prakash alias Bapuji, who was killed under mysterious circumstances on May 9 night, 2016. However, the body was cremated without informing police about death of Bapuji.

Later, Bira Behera lodged a complaint suspecting on Nabin Dalei’s family in his son Bapuji’s alleged murder. On the basis of the complaint, police detained four — Nabin Dalei, Bikram Dalei, Rabi Dalei and Babula Dalei — in connection with the case. The accused had also gone through lie detection test in Bhubaneswar along with interrogation to probe the murder case.

Reacting to police inaction, Bapuji’s widow wife along with her son had approached Puri Superintendent of Police following which the four accused were arrested and forwarded to the court. After they were sent to judicial custody, the villagers started torturing the family.

While the case is still in court, the Kangaroo court did not allow the family members to reside in the village. They were driven out of the village at midnight. After they took shelter beneath a tree at Nuagaon, the local administration intervened in the matter and accommodated the family on premises of Satapada panchayat office.
