After 22 years, four convicted in graft case in Odisha

Baripada: The Special Vigilance Court, Baripada today sentenced three officials and a contractor of the erstwhile Orissa State Electricity Board (OSEB) to one-year imprisonment after convicting them in a 22-year-old corruption case.

In addition to the jail term, the court has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of them.

Further, each of them will have to undergo an additional imprisonment of another two months on failure to pay the fine amount, the court has stated in its order.

After conducting a hearing in the case, Vigilance Judge Tara Prasad Rath sentenced then Superintending Engineer of OSEB’s Balasore Circle Chadhe Ramkrishnada, then Executive Engineer of Rairangpur Electrical Division Gouranga Chandra Sahu, then Accountant of Rairangpur Electrical Division Radha Kanta Barik and proprietor of M/s Classic India Sales & Suppliers Girija Shankar to one-year in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of them.

According to case details, huge corruption to the tune of lakhs of rupees had taken place during the purchase of cables in the year 1994-95 in Rairangpur Electrical Division.

Following a complaint by Balasore Vigilance DSP Mahesh Mohanty in this connection, the Vigilance Department had registered a case.

The court made no pronouncement on another official Satish Kumar Das, who was connected with the case since he has died in 2013.
