Patnaik said so while addressing a gathering at the IDCOL auditorium here on the occasion of state level Labour Day celebrations.

“Labourers contribute to development at every sphere. They are the charioteers of progress and backbone of the society,” said Patnaik and made a slew of other announcements to benefit labourers — especially construction workers.

The Chief Minister said that over 50,000 construction workers would get Rs 1,50,000 financial aid to build their houses in the next three years.

Further, the government would provide Rs 10,000 along with the benefits of ‘Mamata Yojana’ for pregnant women and new moms from this group. Also, medical care aid up to Rs 3 lakh would be facilitated to the construction workers in case of diseases such as cancer, heart and kidney diseases.

He also announced that a separate helpline has been set up to assist workers working in other states in case of harassment and a ‘seasonal hostel’ has been set up to teach their children.

Besides, the students studying in class-VI to Class-X would get a scholarship between Rs 2,000 and 4,000. Students who score over 90 percent in HSC examination would be awarded Rs 10,000, said Patnaik.

Naveen awarded four men – Rajendra Singh, Souribandhu Kar, Basant Sahu and Kishore Jena – with ‘Biju Shramika Bandhu Award’ and Rs 50,000 in cash for worthwhile contribution towards welfare of labourers of the state.
