3-day training programme on disaster preparedness begins

With 125 youths from 13 most vulnerable and disaster prone districts of Odisha like Cuttack, Ganjam, Puri, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Balasore, Centre for Youth and Social Development (CYSD) is organizing a three-day Training Programme on “Youth and Disaster Management” from 9th September to 11th September, 2015 at Development Resource and Training Centre, Bhubaneswar jointly with Viswa Yuvak Kendra (VYK).

Odisha, with its long coastline adjoining the Bay of Bengal, is always on high alerts ahead of cyclonic storms and their aftermath of heavy rain and floods. While Western Odisha is prone to acute droughts, a large section of the State is prone to earthquakes. With almost 80% of annual rainfall concentrated over 3 months, the State is highly vulnerable to floods. Odisha is vulnerable to cyclones during April-May and September-November. Once every few decades a super cyclone strikes Odisha. Sixteen of the 30 districts of Odisha, fall under moderate damage risk seismic zones.

“While we cannot actually prevent the arrival of natural disasters, we can certainly improve our preparedness to face them,” said P.K Sahoo, Chairman, CYSD, emphasizing the re-skilling of Disaster Management Teams (DMTs) and Shelter Management Committees (SMCs) in most vulnerable and disaster prone districts of Odisha This three-day programme aims at developing necessary skill pertain to rescue, evacuation, first-aid, relief/shelter management, warning, information & dissemination, and to chalk out a plan of action for the DMTs and SMCs for further course of action based on their skill and existing situation in fields.

Sri Jagadananda, former State Information Commissioner, Odisha and Mentor-cum- Co-Founder, CYSD, Sri Uday Shankar Singh, Chief Controller, Viswa Yuvak Kendra (VYK), New Delhi and Sri Chakradhar Panda, Secretary, Red Cross, Odisha shared their valuable thoughts on Youth and Disaster Management during the inaugural session chaired by Sri P.K .Sahoo, Chairman, CYSD.
