Puri, Jan 22:

A poor 30 year old pregnant labourer breathed her last after delivering her baby boy due to excessive bleeding and lack of medical facilities in Mot village under Brahmagiri police station in Puri district on Tuesday, making mincemeat of the grandiose claims of the Odisha government about providing maternal and new born care at their doorsteps.

The labourer, identified as Sabi Munda from Gadadharpur village under Ghatagaon police station of Keonjhar district, is working along with her husband at a road construction site in Mot village under Brahmagiri Block of Puri district to make ends meet even though she was expecting.

The incident happened while Raghu, the husband of the woman, had gone to his village on some work leaving Sabi to the care of other co-workers.

While the co-workers did call the 102 and 108 ambulance services once the labour pain kicked in on Tuesday evening, an 102 ambulance reached the spot only at 1 AM in the night. By that time, the woman had already given birth to a child and was bleeding profusely. She succumbed to excessive bleeding while on her way to the hospital.

The doctor declared her dead at arrival and attributed her death to excessive bleeding coupled with lack of medical care on time.

The child, however, has been rescued by the Child Helpline volunteers from Puri.

The police on the other hand, have registered an unnatural death case and have sent the body for post mortem to Puri.

“Which contractor had employed an expecting lady in construction work and why did the ambulance take so long to arrive on the spot? Who is to be held responsible for this?” questioned a local resident.

“The incident thoroughly exposes the Odisha government, no matter how hard it keeps trumpeting its success in maternal health schemes and welfare programmes such as 102 and 108 ambulance services, Mamata Yojana etc,” said another resident of the area.
