NHRC seeks ATR from Odisha govt on corporal punishment to school girls

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action taken report (ATR) from the Odisha government on alleged corporal punishment to three girl students at Deogaon Nodal UP School in Balangir, within four weeks.

Three girl students, Nituna Sahu, Babita Sahu and Girija Rana of Class-VI of Deogaon Nodal UP School in Balangir district were forced to do sit-ups 1000 times as they failed to greet Bigyan Budek, a teacher of the school on June 23 this year when he entered the school premises, Das had said in his complaint.

The petitioner had pointed out that the action of the teacher violated provisions of the Child Rights and Right to Education Act 2010 while stating further that corporal punishment has been banned in all schools.

The petitioner had said that after doing 1000 sit-ups, the girls fell unconscious and became ill.

The parents of the girls had also lodged a complaint with the headmistress of the school in this regard.
