Odisha govt to hunt for new coal, gold, gemstone reserves

The Odisha government is planning to conduct a survey operation this year to look for new reserves of coal and graphite and traces of gold and gemstones in the state,  sources in the state Steel and Mines department said.

The ambitious survey would cover a huge 80,000 sq kms area in north-west and central Odisha, the sources informed.

The exploration, to be taken up with the assistance of the Geological Survey of India, would cover the coal belt of Jharsuguda district to look for new coal reserves, Giringkela area in Sundergarh district for gold, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Cuttack districts for graphite and Kalahandi district for gemstones, the sources added.

The state government, according to the sources, has earmarked Rs 8 crore in the current financial year for the purpose.
