Bhubaneswar, July 29:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a show cause notice to the Odisha government as to why a monetary relief of Rs 25,000 shall be not paid to a journalist who was injured in an assault by the police.

NHRC_LOGO-2Acting on two separate petitions filed by human rights activists Prabir Kumar Das and Akhand, the NHRC has directed the chief secretary to reply within four weeks as to why a compensation of Rs 25,000 should not be paid to Subhakanta Padhihary, a journalist who sustained injuries after being assaulted by 8 to 10 jawans of Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) on March 25, 2013 while covering protest rallies in front of the residence of the chief minister in Bhubaneswar.

Padhihary was seriously injured and several others faced police excesses in the incident. He was rushed to Capital Hospital by fellow journalists and a complaint was lodged at the Airfield police station.

It may be recalled here that two IRB personnel were placed under suspension and the IIC, Airfield police station was also transferred following the incident.

The Commission, after considering the material placed on record, observed that the human rights of Padhihary have been violated by the public servants for which the State must bear the liability.
