Odisha minister for School and Mass Education Debi Prasad Mishra on Sunday visited Kanakdei Bhatra, the class X student from Khutiguda in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district, who is undergoing treatment for her burns here at the SCB Medical College and Hospital following her suicide bid over her parents’ inability to pay school fees.
The minister announced that cost of Kanakdei’s treatment will be borne by the government and the amount will be met from the OSTF. He said a team of doctors from different departments are treating her and doing their best for her recovery.
Superintendent of SCB Medical College and Hospital Bhubanananda Moharana told reporters that the condition of the patient was ‘very very critical’ as she had suffered 95 percent burns.
He said she is undergoing treatment at the Plastic Surgery department and a team of doctors from various departments led by the head of the Plastic Surgery department is doing its level best to save her.
He said already a sum of Rs 30,000 has been released from the OSTF and her entire cost of her treatment will be borne by the government.
It may be recalled her that Kanakdei, a poor student who studied at the Ghatguda High School under Papadahandi block of Nabarangpur set herself on fire after dousing herself with kerosene on Thursday morning after her poor parents who are daily wagers expressed their inability to pay her school fees of Rs 148.
Kanakdei was first rushed to the Papdahandi hospital then to Nabarangpur district headquarters hospital and from there to MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Brahmapur and later finally on Saturday evening shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital here where she is battling for her life.
