Forest department officials have detained two suspected poachers and seized a Commander jeep with 237 live cartridges, two axes and a knife kept inside the vehicle, departmental sources said on Saturday.
Dhamma Forest Range officials while returning after burying the carcass of the tusker found dead near Ludhagura on Friday came across a suspiciously parked Commander jeep (OAX 1575) with three stepneys on the Patrapalli forest road with nobody inside.
The officials seized 237 live cartridges of different types, two axes and a knife from the jeep.
Two persons suspected to have been poachers were detained by the Forest department in this connection. They have been identified as Bhagwan Singh of Ranchi and Gupte Dharua of Brahmani village.
Forest department officials suspect the two to be behind the killing of the tusker at Ludhagura Chhak.They are being interrogated, they said.
There have been at least two cases of elephant poaching in Sambalpur district in the last four days.While one was reported in Ludhagura on Friday another was reported in Landijharan forests on January 20.
