In a tragic incident, four students drowned while taking bath in Brahmani river here on the outskirts of Rourkela in Odisha’s Sundargarh district this morning.
They have been identified as Soumya Ranjan Barik (22), Anurag Das (19), Kunal Prasad Soni (19) and Gyan Prakash Mohanty(19).
According to reports, five students, including four Plus Science students of the local Deepika English Medium School here,had gone to Brahmani river at Tarkara pump house for a bath in the morning hours. Of them Soumyaranjan was a final year student of Odisha Engineering College,Bhubaneswar.
While taking bath, two students slipped into the deep waters. In an attempt to rescue their friends, the three other students also were swept away by the river current.
A few local people, who were present near the dam, jumped into the water and managed to rescue one of them.
Following information, a fire brigade team rushed to the spot and fished out the bodies of two students.
The bodies of the rest two were recovered later.
While the identity of the deceased was not immediately known, reports, however said all of them are natives of Rourkela.
While four students were studying in a private school in Rourkela, the other was a student of a private engineering college in Bhubaneswar, the reports said.
The condition of the rescued student, admitted to the hospital, is stated to be critical.
It may be mentioned here that although as many as nine persons have died while taking batch in the river near the pump house this year, the local administration is yet to take any preventive measures.
