Two members of an opera party were killed on the spot and 34 injured in a tragic road mishap on Thursday evening when the pickup van in which they were travelling skidded off the road on Bartigali ghats, 15 km from Kashipur in Odisha’s Rayagada district.
Six of the grievously injured passengers have been admitted to the district headquarters hospital at Rayagada. Plans are underway to shift two of them to a trauma care hospital in Visakhapatnam as their condition has worsened further, sources said.
Reports said an opera party from Jaipatna in Kalahandi district was on its way to perform at a Shiva temple in Kalyansingpur block of Rayagada on Thursday evening when the accident occurred at around 8pm as the pickup van in which they were travelling skidded off the road and tumbled down at the Bartigali ghats when one of its tyres burst.
Kashipur police rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations. The police recovered two bodies of two members of the opera party from the spot and rushed the injured to the Rayagada district headquarters hospital.
The dead have been identified as Manmath Rout (18) and Fagunu Majhi (25), police said.
