Umerkote: Tragedy struck a family on the day of auspicious Raksha Bandhan on Monday as three of its members died and the health condition of one minor girl turned critical after consuming country cakes in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district.

The incident took place at Haldi village of Umerkote block in the district.

Bhima Harijan (55), who has two wives and four sons and one daughter, had the worst Raksha Bandhan celebration ever in his life as he lost two of his family members today.

The deceased have been identified as Diban Harijan, a class IX student, and his sister-in-law (elder brother’s wife) Laxmi Harijan (25) and her daughter.

According to reports, Kuntala, the daughter of Bhima had brought country cakes along with Rakhi yesterday. The family had consumed the country cakes last evening and hours later Bhima’s daughter-in-law Laxmi died. She was buried as per their rituals.

Other members of the family including Laxmi’s two daughters fell sick and started vomiting, reports added.

Hearing screams for help, villagers called 108 ambulance and rushed the four to Umerkote Community Health Centre (CHC). On Monday morning Diban breathed his last while two others battled for life. However, one minor girl succumbed.

Upon enquiry, the doctors got to know that all of them fell sick after consuming the country cakes. Later, the food item was sent for test to examine whether it was contaminated or not.

On other hand, the body of Laxmi was dug out from her grave this morning and sent for post mortem to know the exact cause of the death, sources said.

Laxmi’s husband, Bhabagrahi, is all fine as he had not eaten the country cake.
